Thuppakki : Movie Review

Thuppakki is a 2012 Tamil action movie featuring Vijay, Kajal Agarwal, Vidyut in the lead with Sathyan and Jayaram supporting them. Thuppakki is directed by Murugadoss who for the first time collaborates with Mani's favourites - Santhosh Sivan & Sreekar Prasad. The movie is an ode to the army men who leave their families and work in the most tough conditions to preserve peace in the country.

The winning factor is the message Murugadoss has successfully delivered about the lives of army men who have sacrificed their lives for the nation. Vijay as Jagdish fits perfectly in the role of an Army man and has delivered a very mature performance. As Vijay said in one of his interviews, his subtlety showcased in this movie is something new for him. I would say that he has the most stylish look of all his movies. The scene during the first terrorist attack, where he turns and at the same time puts on his sunglasses is just damn good. In fact, Vijay has been repeating the same mistakes for the past few years which has landed him in this clown status amongst a section of people including me. :) The mistakes range from the stereotype roles and stories to repetitive mannerisms and bad choice of stories. In fact from what I heard he is making another mistake by not collaborating with Gautam Menon once again. Well, what can I say, when an actor is rejecting Gautam Menon twice !!

A.R Murugadoss has written a very entertaining action thriller which keeps you engaged throughout the movie. It might not be a spine chilling action thriller or an honest army movie, but it is the right kind of movie Vijay and his fans require at this juncture. Murugadoss's ideas along with Santhosh Sivan's camera has brought out some of the best entries for Vijay during action sequences. The best thing about Santhosh Sivan is the clarity that he brings on the screen. Be the smoke or leaves or the sky, everything looks crisp and clear. Well, having him in the movie is a blessing for Vijay. One of the best shots is the scene where Vijay cherishes his childhood memories while looking at the photos on the wall. This scene was shot from behind with a small light in front of Vijay and rest of the room is filled with darkness. You have to see the movie to understand what I'm telling. Another highlight is in the first half when Vijay enters his room, Santhosh Sivan has added an extra lighting resembling the cars passing by his house which adds reality to its core. Hats off Sir..

Music has been crooned by Murugadoss's fav Harris Jeyaraj. I won't say it is the best from this combo, but "Google Google" was so loud and foot tapping that it left the fans begging for Once more. The army ode "Poi Varava" is a very touching song about the lives of army men and my personal fav of this album too. Apart from these, "Jagdish theme" sounds good but leaves you tired after hearing it throughout the movie. One special mention about the BGM is Vidyut's theme, which is pretty scary and adds value to the visuals.

Kajal has given a great performance with her comedy timing and bubbly expressions. She does what Asin excelled in Gajini. Murugadoss has always been a expert in bringing the comedian out of the lead actors. Though Sathyan and Jayaram were not given much to perform, they did their jobs pretty decently.

On the whole "Thuppakki" is a good catch for Diwali. Go and watch it. My only advice is that don't step inside the theatre with too much expectations.

Special note :
The logo of "Thuppakki" is one of the best I've seen in recent times. Murugadoss definitely brings out the best. 7am Arivu logo was also very creative.

Review :
3/5 (One star each for Murugadoss, Santhosh Sivan & Vijay's make up)
