The Hobbit : The Desolation of Smaug - Movie Review

Hi World. Coming back to blogging after a 9 months hiatus. Work has taken a serious toll on my blogging. Nothing like a good movie in the weekend, to relieve from your pressure.

Today's review is about the much awaited 2nd installment of  the Hobbit - "The Hobbit - The Desolation of Smaug"

Directed by our fantasy Guru, Peter Jackson, this $225 mn epic takes us back to the world of wizadry, dragons and magic once again. But this time, its much better than the previous installment, just like how LOTR 2 was to LOTR 1.

In continuation to the "Unexpected Journey", the story gains pace and momentum right from the first scene till the last scene, though it does get a little soggy in the middle. The best part of Peter's movies is that he leaves you no time to think over and analyze the previous scene, as there is so much of CG and screenplay constantly evolving in front of us. As the movie begins, a sense of comfort sets after all the familiar characters are introduced. And gradually, Peter brings in new characters into the story, making sure it is interesting and at the same time not very confusing.

Story wise, Hobbit 2 can be summed up in 4 lines, but a lot of thought has gone into the screenplay. In case you didn't know, Guillermo del Toro has co-written the screenplay along with Peter and 2 others, which takes the level of brilliance to the next level. The highlight CG sequence is the lake scene, which lasts for about 15 minutes and leaves you spellbound for a few days, I'm sure. Somehow, this is the first time, Gollum did not feature in the middle earth fantasy. With more screen time for the Dragon - Smaug, wonder if you'll even realize Gollum was not there in the movie. Peter Jackson knows the pulse of the kid in all of us and has managed to give us a breathtaking and thrilling adventure, yet again. I love the way in which the movie ended.

Overall, it is a wonderful fantasy film and worth a watch, not because there are no other good movies in theatres, but due to the incredible LOTR effect created by Peter Jackson, who never ceases to amaze us.

My Rating :
3.5/5
