Looper Movie Review : Sooper
Looper is a 2012 Sci-fi action movie directed by Rian Johnson. It stars Bruce Willis, Joesph Gordon - Levitt, Emily Blunt, Pierce Gagnon, Jeff Daniels and Noah Segan.
The movie transports us to the Year 2044 and 2074 wherein crime would have taken the worst possible avatar. Technology would have improved so much that disposing a body secretly was no longer possible. So using time travel, crime organizations transport people to the past and get them killed using hitmen called "Loopers". This forms the crux of the story.
The movie is an honest attempt to make you understand a very complex-creative idea. To support that, director Rian Johnson has written an amazing screenplay to connect all the dots. I haven't seen the other two movies of Rian, but he has created a great impression in me with the way the story and characters have been created. Though the time travel concept reminds you of the "Terminator" franchise, the whole "Looper" thing has been presented in a very new way. It makes you feel "Wow" for the creativity that has gone into this movie. The movie doesn't have so many CG scenes as in "Minority Report" or "Island" or any other good sci-fi flick. But whatever CG comes makes you believe its existence in the story. The futuristic view of China is definitely one of the highlights in the movie.
Joseph Gordon has made a very brave attempt in this movie. No one has even attempted this kind. To make the characters look believable, Rian Johnson and Make up artist Kazuhiro Tsuj (Transformers, Hellboy, Benjamin Button, Planet of the Apes) have done a remarkable job in transforming Joseph's look into a young Bruce Willis. Damn these guys are good. In the scene where both characters meet in a coffee shop, I bet you can't tell 6 differences between both. Joseph has observed the earlier movies of Bruce Willis and brought life to the prosthetic by emoting exactly like Bruce.
Another highlight in the movie is the child star Pierce Gagnon. I would definitely say, that he tops the list of Hollywood's creepiest kids. Even the kid in Omen & Exorcist come next. At times, I felt it was a 40 yr old guy's emotions shrunk in a kid's face through CG. The acting was one of the best performances I have seen from a child. His eyes emoted his actions even before he spoke. That kid is definitely a great treasure for the film industry.
Bruce Willis always does a great job. He is impeccable. And for the first time I am seeing him in a semi bald look. Emily Blunt is ok. Nothing great expected from her anyways. Lol. Noah's character (Kid Blue) was not chiseled well by Rian. It is often predictable and could be avoided at some scenes. Jeff Daniels is no value add to this movie. He still reminds me of the character in "Dumb & Dumber". So I am not able to picture him as a tough crime boss. Maybe its bcos I saw D&D recently. My mistake.. :P
Coming to the music, it was not that noticeable at any scene. In fact I don't remember any of the soundtrack except from some techno sounds which frequent this genre.
On the whole, it is a good movie. Kudos to the team and in specific, Joseph and Pierce (kid). Both have a long way to go still.
