Argo : Movie Review

Argo is a 2012 political thriller film based on real events, directed by Ben Affleck. It is based on the 1979 Iranian Hostage Crisis involving the thrilling rescue of 6 American citizens from the fortress of Iran. It stars Ben Affleck, John Goodman, Alan Arkin, Bryan Cranston in leading roles.

The highlights about Argo are
1.) It is based on true events
2.) Amazing narration
3.) Nerve cracking screenplay

To even imagine that this kind of a rescue operation happened for real is itself so unbelievable. So my first salute is to Tony Mendez and his team and the Canadian Embassy for pulling off a successful operation. I might sound like an American fanatic, but the sheer courage and thought process that went into this impossible rescue operation is something to be commended.

Ben Affleck as Tony Mendez is as spectacular as always. He fits perfectly into any character he plays. I like the changes he has done to his hairstyle and his thick beard. John Goodman and Alan Arkin as the Hollywood producers bring some laughs into the otherwise serious script. The writers have made sure there a couple of one liners here and there. That is one thing that amuses the audience. Bryan Cranston as the Ben's supervisor has done an amazing job. I haven't seen much of his performances, but he is definitely a value add to this movie.. In fact every single actor has done a great job. Be it the Iranian / American artists, they never made me feel I was watching a movie in a theatre. Everything about this movie was realistic. The opening shot is not only one of the best scenes, it looks like one of the most difficult scenes to shoot. I mean, having a frickin 10000 people shouting slogans on the streets can't get more real. Ben Affleck's skills are tremendously increasing with every movie. I see him as the next Clint Eastwood. However what I don't understand is, eventhough it was the '80s why are people smoking on an Airplane. I'm not trying to be a smart ass who identified a goof in the movie, but I am just trying to find an answer.

All said and done, a movie is lifeless w/o the music and cinematography. Alexandre Desplat and Rodrigo Pierto provide the exact flavor and treatment required for a story like this. Though the score is not the best Middle Eastern OST, it still tries hard to bring you goose bumps ; which it doesn't. Handheld camera has always been a treat to the eyes for this genre of movies. Well nothing extra ordinary about the cinematography, but it is suits the tone.

Sometimes, the simplest of things are also the most important. Boarding an airplane is a normal job for a common man. But for a hostage trying to escape a country, it is as important as escaping from a sinking ship. The scenes involving the 6 hostages trying to flee Iran in the climax have been captured so brilliantly that it feels real when you watch it on the big screen.

I tip my hat to the whole team of Argo.. Waiting to watch it again!!
